The Government of Macedonia strongly opposed the Albanians’ efforts to establish a higher education institution in Albanian. On December 14, 1994, shortly before the founding of the University, the government sent in numerous police forces and bulldozers demolished the facility intended to hold education within the then illegal University of Tetova. Frustrated by the brutal police behavior, Tetovo Albanians turned out in protest. Clashes between police and part of the demonstrators left many injured and one demonstrator killed. 130 Tetovo State University was founded on June 4, 1994 in the founding assembly convened by the Albanian Cultural Community in Macedonia, in the capacity of the founder, while the initiator and signer of the documents for the establishment of the University and for the appointment of the provisional bodies of the university was Professor Abdulla Mehmeti, President of the Cultural Community of the Albanians of Macedonia. It remained unrecognized as a state university until January 2004, when the Law on the Establishment of Tetovo State University was adopted by the Parliament of the Republic of Albania.

На напорите на Албанците да се формира една високообразовна институција на албански јазик, Владата на Македонија жестоко се спротивстави. На 14 декември 1994 година, во пресрет на основањето на Универзитетот, владата испрати бројни полициски сили и со булдужери го урнаа објектот каде што беше предвидена настава во рамките на тогаш нелегалниот Тетовски универзитет. Иритирани од бруталниот однос на полицијата, Албанците од Тетотво излегоа на протести. Во судирите меѓу полицијата и дел од демонстрантите имаше многу повредени, а еден демонстрант загина. Државниот тетовски универзитет е основан на 4 јуни 1994 на основачкото собрание свикано од Културната Заедница на Албанците во Македонија, во својство на основач, додека иницијатор и потписник на документите за основање на Универзитетот и за именување на привремените органи на универзитетот беше проф. Абдула Мехмети, претседател на Културната Заедница на Албанците во Македонија. Како државен универзитет останува непризнаен од властите сè до јануари 2004 кога се донесе Законот за основање на Државниот универзитет во Тетово од страна на Собранието на Република Македонија.
Tetovo University
The Macedonian Government strongly opposed the efforts of the Albanians to establish a higher educational institution in Albanian. On December 14, 1994, in the wake of inauguration of the University, the government has sent massive police forces and tore down the building of the illegal Tetovo University with bulldozers. Irritated by the brutal police action, Albanians from Tetoto protestedand demanded high educational institution in Albanian language. In the confrontation between the police and part of the demonstrators many were injured and one protester was killed. The Tetovo State University was established on June 4, 1994 at the Constitutional Assembly convened by the Cultural Association of Albanians in Macedonia, in the capacity of founder, whereby Professor Abdula Mehmeti, President of the Cultural Association of Albanians in Macedonia, was the initiator and signatory of the documents for establishing the University and for the appointment of the provisional organs of the university. As a public university it remained unrecognized by the authorities until January 2004, when the Law on the Establishment of the State University of Tetovo was passed by the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia.
